How to Get More New Patients - Consistently

by Joy Gendusa

If there was a way to get more new patients than your competitors every month without much effort, you would sign up, right? It really comes down to marketing - simple, I know. Most dentists know they need to promote their practice, but how do you do it?

There are many different marketing channels from radio, TV, direct mail postcards, email and even social media. They all can have great success rates, but, ultimately, you have to know what works to bring in more patients for you and your practice.

From my experience, I know that a strategic and well-planned out postcard marketing campaign can accomplish your goal to increase patients and create awareness in your community, where eventually you’ll be the go-to-dentist in your area. No really, it’s happened over and over again.

How Does Postcard Marketing Work?

  1. Target - who do you want as your patient?
Decide exactly who you want to target (your ideal patient base). Get specific: for example, women, ages 21-55 who live 3 miles from your practice.

You can actually purchase a mailing list with these criteria and even get more detailed so you know your marketing dollars aren’t going to waste and your message gets into the right hands.

  2. Design – Get their attention
Create a custom postcard design with a message that gets reaches and relates to your ideal patients.

For example, “You CAN have a healthy, beautiful smile” or “Embarrassed by your smile? You don’t have to be with cosmetic dentistry.”

  3. Mail to that list. Consistently.
Now that you have a solid message and list, start mailing on a regular basis to introduce and establish yourself in the community.
  4. Mail to that list consistently. (yes, I did repeat that one)
Many dentists only mail once. But marketing doesn’t work that way. Think about watching your favorite TV show, how many times do you see the same commercial within that program? Definitely more than once. Repetition is key to results.
  5. Get ready for more calls and patients.
Prepare your front desk staff to handle the influx of new patients and enjoy the benefits of new business. Always remember to continue marketing to keep a steady amount of new patients coming in.

How Do You Benefit from Postcard Marketing?

Quite Simply:

  • Consistent New Patients
  • Worry-Free Marketing Based on Proven Results
  • Higher Revenue

I’ve tried direct marketing before, and I’ve had great results. I wonder if adding a Yelp link or review to the dental direct marketing would help to drive new customers too.

  2. The Visible Dentist Says:

    @Jonathan

Beyond direct mail marketing, local oriented businesses such as dental practices can certainly benefit from other channels of visibility.

Popular review sites similar to Yelp offer a lot of potential for gaining new business. Reviews are the second stage in the decision making process instrumental to consumers making wise purchasing decisions.

Good post, Its important to look into marketing methods with any dentist practice. I’ll be sure to look into direct mail when the time comes. I’ve bookmarked this post to read again later.

  6. Roselle Dentist Says:

It seems like postcards are very hit and miss. We’ve done them in the past and they seem like a risky option. My experience has shown better results lately with internet marketing.

  7. Steve Says:

I found these the other day from Smart Practice, do you think they are worth the time?

  8. The Visible Dentist Says:

    Steve,

I like ‘em - the price is right and the concept is solid, however, while “stick-its” are helpful reminders for patients of record, compared to postcards or SEO marketing, they would do little or nothing to attract new patients.
